How published THC figures compare

Strain databases list 19% THC (Leafly), 18–24% (AllBud) and 19–23% (Weedmaps).2,3,4 Seed listings run from 14–19% for Grand Daddy Purp’s original and 22% for Emerald Triangle’s version to 29% for Garden of Green’s, a figure it attributes to reports from users.5,6,7 In state lab results the median was 20.99%, 90% of tests came in below 27.39% and 19.8% reached 25% or more, so 29% sits above nine in ten lab results; 23 of the other 57 strains in our dataset have a higher median.1

Where the tests come from matters: Nevada 21.13% (416 tests), Washington 21.30% (58 tests), Michigan 16.87% (24 tests); Washington’s median is 4.43 points above Michigan’s.1 In the years with at least 20 tests, the medians were 2018 20.67% (28 tests), 2019 21.13% (36 tests), 2020 20.19% (222 tests), 2021 24.54% (180 tests), 2022 20.05% (42 tests).1

Leafly’s terpene profile lists caryophyllene, then limonene and humulene.2 Our 421 tests with individual terpene values, 416 of them from Nevada labs, rank β-caryophyllene 0.50%, limonene 0.37%, α-humulene 0.22% by median, the same order.1 Different labs, products and years can produce different rankings; only a batch’s own certificate describes that batch.

Published CBD figures sit above what most of our tests found: AllBud, Emerald Triangle and Garden of Green list 1% and Grand Daddy Purp 0.35%, and Leafly lists 1% CBG instead; in state lab results 247 of the 490 tests that reported CBD found none, and 2 reached 1% or more.1,2,3,5,6,7

Limits of this data

  • Coverage is uneven. NV (416), WA (58), MI (24), MA (8) supply most of the 514 tests, with HI (4), MD (4) adding the rest; Nevada alone supplies 80.9%, and no California results matched. Oregon and Rhode Island results carry no product names and could not be matched.
  • Washington tests count only when the strain field and the product name both name the strain; 121 Washington flower results with only a generic product name (such as “Flower Lot”) were left out.
  • Some labs report higher THC than others, so we publish medians and middle ranges rather than maxima. One lab supplied 41.6% of these tests (18 labs in total), and one producer accounts for 43.5% of the 485 tests that record a producer.
  • Terpene medians come from 421 tests with individual terpene values, 416 of them from Nevada labs; Maryland’s 4 results report only total terpenes, and Washington, Michigan and Hawaii report none. We matched names strictly: crosses and near-miss names (for example “Candyland Cookies”) are excluded and counted, and duplicate certificates are removed.
