History
The history of Candyland
Candyland joins two California families: Granddaddy Purple, which Ken Estes launched in Oakland in 2003, and the Cookies line of the breeder Jigga, through a Platinum Cookies phenotype from the Bay Area.1,2,3,4 Leafly counts it among the crosses breeders made as the Cookies family gained popularity and married into the purple strains.5
Timeline

Why it spread
It came out of a wave of crosses. Leafly’s Purps genealogy says that as the Cookies family gained popularity, breeders crossed it with the dominant purple strains, creating Cherry Pie and Candyland, both with darker tones and sweeter flavors.5 Leafly describes compact, camouflage-colored buds under a coat of sugar-like trichomes, and the editors of its list of the 100 best strains say they love it “even more because of its impressive buds”.11,15
It also became breeding stock. About a third of the 69 direct crosses SeedFinder lists come from Brain Freeze Seeds, which describes the Candyland it used as Platinum Cookies × GDP #5, and Dark Heart Nursery crossed it with Sour Diesel to make SPK.12,13,16 Our lab records come mostly from Nevada (80.9% of tests), one of the states whose results carry product names (see potency).10
The name
Candy Land is also a children’s board game, created by Eleanor Abbott and published by Milton Bradley in 1949.17 AllBud writes that if the strain evokes images of childhood board games, “it’s no accident”, while the breeder descriptions on SeedFinder describe parents and buds without explaining the name.18,19,20,21
In 2016 Oregon’s regulator listed Candyland among strain names that referred to toys, games or cartoon characters marketed to children and barred it from packaging; licensees could rename the strain or use its initials.8,9 Menus also write it Kandyland or Candy Land.15,22
The disputed parts of the story
- The second parent: Bay Platinum Cookies (Leafly’s description, Weedmaps, Grand Daddy Purp), Platinum Cookies (AllBud, Leafly’s lists) or Platinum Girl Scout Cookies (Emerald Triangle’s version); see genetics.11,15,18,19,20,22
- Who bred it: Weedmaps and SeedFinder credit Ken Estes’s Grand Daddy Purp team; Emerald Triangle says it bred its own version from parents in its library, and Garden of Green sells a feminized one whose description credits Estes.19,20,21,22
- Type: a sativa (Leafly) or sativa-leaning hybrid (Weedmaps), at 70–80% sativa in other listings.15,18,19,21,22
- Strength: published THC runs from 14–19% (Grand Daddy Purp) to 29% (Garden of Green); see potency for what lab tests found.19,21
