Genetics

Is Candyland indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

Candyland is a sativa, or sativa-dominant hybrid: Leafly classifies it as a sativa, Weedmaps calls it sativa-leaning, and AllBud and the seed listings put it at 70–80% sativa.1,2,3,4,5,6 Every source names Granddaddy Purple as one parent; the other is written as Bay Platinum Cookies, Platinum Cookies or Platinum Girl Scout Cookies, depending on who describes which version.1,2,3,5

The parents

Granddaddy Purple is an indica that Ken Estes popularized in 2003, according to Leafly, which names Mendo Purps, Skunk and Afghanistan as its parents; Leafly users call it sleepy, relaxed and hungry and rate it mostly calming, the other end of the scale from Candyland.1,14 SeedFinder’s family tree marks Candyland’s GDP side as a backcross and gives Granddaddy Purple as probably Purple Urkle × Big Bud; Weedmaps and Grand Daddy Purp’s own description both say a GDP male was used.2,4

Platinum Cookies, also sold as Platinum GSC or Platinum Girl Scout Cookies, is a hybrid that Leafly calls “the next evolution of GSC”, a cross of OG Kush, Durban Poison and a third unknown strain, with Candyland listed among its children; Leafly’s GSC page counts Platinum GSC among GSC’s variations, and its Cookies genealogy says that “Green Door had Platinum Cookies.”8,15,16

Bay Platinum Cookies is the Grand Daddy Purp breeder’s own: SeedFinder describes it as “a combination of the Bay 11 strain and a Platinum Cookies phenotype from the Bay Area”, and its family tree traces the Platinum Cookies side to a “Platinum Cut” of Girl Scout Cookies, Bay 11 to Appalachia × Ken’s Kush, and Appalachia to Green Crack × Tres Dawg.4,7

Which Platinum Cookies? Four ways of writing it

Sources agree that Candyland is a Granddaddy Purple cross bred in the Grand Daddy Purp line; they write the other parent in four ways.

Second parent as writtenWho says so
Bay Platinum CookiesLeafly’s strain description; Weedmaps; Grand Daddy Purp’s listing on SeedFinder (“Bay Platinum Cookies x Ken’s Grand Daddy Purple (GDP)”)1,2,4
Platinum CookiesAllBud; Leafly’s list of the 100 best strains and its Purps genealogy; Leafly’s Platinum Cookies page, which lists Candyland as a child3,8,17,18
Platinum Girl Scout CookiesEmerald Triangle, for its own version5
Platinum Cookies, with “GDP #5” for the other sideBrain Freeze Seeds, describing the Candyland it used in Watermelon Freeze11

These can describe one cross at different levels of detail: SeedFinder lists Bay Platinum Cookies as a Bay Area Platinum Cookies phenotype crossed with Bay 11.7

How sativa is it?

Every source leans sativa: Leafly lists it as a sativa that is mostly energizing, Weedmaps as a sativa-leaning hybrid, AllBud at 70% sativa and 30% indica, and the seed listings at 75% (Grand Daddy Purp), 70% (Emerald Triangle) and 80% (Garden of Green).1,2,3,4,5,6 Its parents lean the other way: Leafly classifies Granddaddy Purple as an indica and rates Platinum Cookies mostly calming, and it notes that Candyland can exhibit many different indica phenotypes.1,8,14

The original and the seed versions

SeedFinder lists three breeders’ Candyland: Grand Daddy Purp, Emerald Triangle and Garden of Green.19 Grand Daddy Purp’s was sold as regular seeds only, never feminized; Emerald Triangle, whose version is feminized only, says it selected Granddaddy Purple and Platinum Girl Scout Cookies from its library to breed its own; and SeedFinder lists Garden of Green’s feminized version as a descendant of Grand Daddy Purp’s.4,5,6,13

Weedmaps puts it plainly: the original Grand Daddy Purp release was regular seed, later feminized offerings carry their own specifications, and “a shared name doesn’t make every seed pack identical.”2

Black Candyland, Candyland Peyote and other names

Breeders reuse the name. SeedFinder lists Black Candyland from Jordan of the Islands, a mostly sativa cross of Candyland, Animal Cookies and Blackberry Kush that flowers in 60–65 days, and Candyland Peyote from Seeds66, Candyland × Peyote Purple; CherryLand (Candyland × Gelato), Tangieland (Tangie × Candyland) and GumbyLand, Candyland crossed with itself, play on the name too.12,13 None of these is Candyland itself: our lab figures count only labels that name Candyland alone (see potency), and our store counts leave them out too (see where to find it).

What our lab data adds

Our lab matching accepts Candyland written as one word or two; 16 of the 514 tests are labelled with the two-word spelling “Candy Land”.20 An “X” that only separates the name from a packaging word is read as a separator, not a cross, so the 79 tests labelled like “CANDYLAND X BULK FLOWER” count as Candyland.20

We excluded 128 results sold under near-miss names. The largest group, “Candyland Cookies” (56), is treated as a different name.20 Labels such as “Candy Land x Animal Cookies #8” and “Blackberry Kush X Candyland” carry the ingredients SeedFinder lists for Black Candyland.12,20 Besides the flower tests we use, 82 concentrate results matched the name strictly.20 None of this tests parentage: matching is by label text, and the same name from different growers can be different genetics.
